TWO HOURS later, after talking to everyone and trying not to seem tired and drawn, Justin was finally able to leave the church. He went to use the restroom and bumped into someone. Justin said excuse me, grumbling under his breath that he needed to watch where he was going.

“I heard you were back in town.”

The deep rumbling voice was all too familiar, the one he heard in his nightmares. Justin backed away. The sneer on Mark’s lips when Justin looked at him was more than reminiscent.

“Yes,” Justin said as he stepped to the side to go around him. “Just for the funeral.” He needed to get the hell out of here. Justin forced his legs to move forward as Mark jostled his shoulder. Justin picked up the pace, stepped into the bathroom, and closed the door, leaning against it as he breathed deeply. His legs held, but damn if he didn’t feel like a kid again.

The door had a lock on the inside, and Justin threw it and went to the sink. He completely forgot why he’d come in here in the first place and had to stop the heat from rising to his face. Justin had known he’d run into that bastard. He’d managed to stay away from him when he’d been in town, but why was the fucker at his father’s funeral? Justin balled his hands into fists and shook all over.

It took a few minutes for him to calm down, and then Justin used the bathroom and washed his hands. He didn’t want to leave in case Mark was still out there, and yet he wasn’t particularly interested in hiding in the bathroom for the rest of the day. In the end, he unfastened the lock and pulled open the door as hard as he could, ready to run for it.

Ethan stood outside looking at him like he’d lost his mind. “What happened? Did you fall in?” Then Ethan turned back to Mark as though they’d been talking. Fucking hell, he needed to figure out a way to separate those two. The last thing he needed was Ethan and Mark becoming chummy.

Justin’s mouth hung open for a second. He ignored Ethan’s question and snapped, “We need to go,” more angrily than he intended, but he knew Ethan would get ready. He then went to find George and Shirley, who were saying good-bye to friends, and they headed out to the limousine. He was more than ready to go back to George’s and do something mindless like watch television.

George and Shirley got in behind him, and eventually Ethan joined them and closed the door.

“Thank goodness that’s over,” Justin said, pulling off his tie. “It was a nice service and everything. Thank you both for arranging it.”

“You’re welcome, sweetheart,” Shirley said.

“I saw you talking to Mark Bobb,” George said. “Justin and I went to school with him. His father is the mayor, has been for twenty years or so now.”

“He was always a dick in high school,” Justin said.
